I’m used to the fast-paced action-packed stories that Smith writes, but this one stands out as one of the fastest and most action-packed. I couldn’t believe it was coming to an end. Now, this is 13 plus hours into the book already. I distinctly remember hearing Bray read “Epilogue” and I looked up from what I was doing and said out loud to myself “No… already”. King of the Wastes might be the longest book in the series but it felt like one of the shortest. Now, a storm is blowing in and lots of other things seem to be happening at the same time. Smith was able to create new and unique things in the later books (finding the Vanguard Islands for example) and then once they found them there was a whole new set of challenges. That’s not the case with King of the Wastes.

The things that the main character(s) go through are pretty much a replayed versions of what they’ve already been through. Normally by eight books into a series, the surprises are over. I should have gone into this story barefoot knowing he was going to blow them off. I mean, at this point, I’m not surprised that Smith was able to not only write another amazing book but, eight books in, still knock my socks off.
